Reflecting on Ackama's 2024 impact

This year at Ackama has been one of resilience and progress in a challenging environment. Following our acquisition of Common Code, we’ve continued to strengthen our capabilities and expand our impact.

We’ve worked with governments, enterprises, and mission-driven organisations to deliver technology that makes systems smarter, services more accessible, and operations more secure. Below we share some of the impactful projects, partnerships, and innovations that have driven tangible change.

In 2024, we focused on projects that drive accessibility, sustainability, and innovation. Below, we’ve highlighted some of the key initiatives that showcase the difference we’ve made this year.

Pacific Blue

In 2023, Ackama developed Pacific Blue’s platform to support their market re-entry as an 100% renewable energy retailer. Our partnership has continued into 2024, with ongoing enhancements and maintenance that ensure the platform remains secure, efficient, and future proofed.

Pacific Blue now abates 1.6 million tonnes of CO2 annually, delivering 100% renewable energy to Australian homes and businesses.

What’s On Melbourne

In 2024, Ackama continued its partnership with the City of Melbourne to support the What’s On Melbourne platform, a vital tool for promoting local businesses and events. This year, the platform drove over 1.8 million leads to Melbourne businesses, showcasing its role in strengthening the local economy and supporting the city’s vibrant culture.

Bank of Papua New Guinea

The Bank of Papua New Guinea’s newly launched website went live this year, providing citizens with a secure, reliable platform for critical financial services. Ackama’s work prioritised security, accessibility, and stakeholder collaboration to support the bank’s vital role in economic stability.

Plain Language Law Project

We took a pragmatic approach to AI with the Plain Language Law API, an in-house experiment that simplified legal language for New Zealanders. This project demonstrated how thoughtful AI can drive accessibility and inclusion across a nation.

Evolving legal simplicity with pragmatic AI.

With Plain Language Law, we’re moving beyond acts and bills and starting to look across new types of laws and rules in New Zealand, including court decisions, tenancy and dispute tribunal findings, and other law-adjacent text.

We’re also well on our way to shipping a new user interface with a focus on browsing and searching across acts and bills, including browsing by topic and related content.

Expanding in the energy industry.

In 2025, Ackama is working on both sides of Consumer Data Right (CDR) integration in the renewable energy sector. We’re implementing CDR for APVI in the new year, while helping energy retailers achieve compliance under the CDR.

This work is driving innovation in Australia’s energy sector, and we’re optimistic about similar advancements in New Zealand, supporting better access to energy data for a fair, sustainable future.
